Shared audio output
If you’re listening to music or watching a movie with your AirPods Max, you can easily share the audio output with another pair of AirPods Max, AirPods Pro, AirPods, or newer Beats headphones. Then two people can hear the same content. How to split the audio output works:
With an active connection with AirPods Max, call Control Center on iPhone or iPad
On the audio card, tap the blue audio icon in the upper right corner of the screen
Select “Share audio” from the list
Bring another pair of headphones or the iPhone or iPad they are connected to near the device
With Beats headphones, you may need to press the pairing button first
Use 3D audio
Like the AirPods Pro, the new AirPods Max also offer the 3D audio function. This gives movies and videos cinema-like surround sound, as if the sound is coming from all directions. The sound field remains assigned to the device and the voice remains with the actor or in the scene on screen. 3D audio is available with these devices:
iPhone 7 or newer
12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation) and newer
11-inch iPad Pro
iPad Air (3rd generation)
iPad (6th generation) and newer
iPad mini (5th generation)
Additionally, iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 must be installed and audiovisual content must be from a supported application such as Apple TV + or Disney +.
The function can be enabled or disabled as follows:
Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone
Open the “Bluetooth” menu item
In the list of devices, tap the “i” symbol next to AirPods Max (must be connected)
Activate / deactivate the “3D audio” element using the cursor
Use “Live Monitoring”
With the “live listening” feature, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch can act as a microphone and send audio to your AirPods Max. Live listening can help you hear a conversation in a noisy area or even someone speaking across the room. For use with AirPods Max, iOS 14.3 must be installed.
To use “Live Monitoring”, the function must be added to the control center:
Tap “Settings> Control Center> Hearing” and add the option at the Control Center
Press “Back” to save the settings
Use “Live Listen”
Open the control center and tap the icon with your ear
Tap “Live Monitoring”
Place the AirPods Max in front of the person you want to hear. You can adjust the device’s volume if you can’t hear it well. Audio level and headphone volume are displayed in real time.

Understanding LED
There is a small LED light next to the Lightning connector on the right ear cup of AirPods Max. Here’s what the individual colors mean:
When the AirPods Max connected to power and you press the noise control button, the LED will glow green when the battery is over 95% charged. When the battery level is less than 95%, the LED lights up orange.
When AirPods Max not connected to electricity, the indicator will light green when the battery is more than 15% charged. Orange means the battery charge is less than 15%.
